About
Joe Tilson was born in London in 1928. He started working as a carpenter and later studied art at St. Martin’s School of Art and Design and at Royal College of London.
In 1955, after winning the Rome Prize, he moved to Rome and since then he shared his time between Italy and England.
He put side by side teaching and artistic activity and in 1962 he had his first one-man show at the Marlborough Gallery, London. He continued to exhibit in their galleries in New York and Rome until 1977 and from 2011 he established a new contract that binds him to Malbourough.
In 1964 he had his works exhibited internationally at the 32nd Venice Biennial. In 1973 he had a retrospective exhibition at the Boymans-van-Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam that was also shown at the Musée Royal de Beaux-Arts, Antwerp and at the Scuderie della Pilotta, Parma, and followed by other exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1979 and at the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol in 1983.
Since 1966 to 1971 he was member of the Art Panel of the Arts Council of Great Britain.
In 1985 he was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
In 1996 he won the Grand Prix d’Honneur at the Ljubjana Biennial.
In 2001 he was invited to be part of the Academy of San Luca in Rome.
His works have been displayed at the Royal Academy of Arts, at the Cristea Gallery and the Beaux Arts Gallery in London, at the Bugno Art Gallery in Venice, at the Centro Saint Benin in Aosta and at Villa Manin in Passariano. Also significant is the presence of his works in the collections of the major public museums, among which the Tate Gallery in London, the Museo de arte in Sao Paulo, the Kunsthalle in Basel.
In 2011 he was awarded the International Do Forni Prize from the Museum of Modern Art of Ca’ Pesaro in Venice.
